Shift Workers Risk Diabetes and Obesity

It has been reported that shift workers are getting too little sleep at the wrong time of day, and this could increase the risk of diabetes and obesity.

The researchers analysed 21 participants and investigated the disruption to their body clocks.  The research showed that changes to normal sleep patterns meant that the body struggled to control sugar levels.

Sugar levels in the blood  were significantly increased during certain parts of the day.  This also highlighted that shift workers were more inclined to put on weight due to lack of sleep and as the body slowed down.
